Amid an actor and writer strike, San Diego Comic-Con 2023 has recaptured the essence of its early days, bringing back the focus on comics and creativity. With major studios largely absent this year, vendors and artists at the convention agree that the event has rediscovered its roots and true spirit.
As attendees flooded into the convention center, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement. Instead of solely seeking out famous actors, people delighted in unique comic exhibits and admired homemade costumes, emphasizing the return to the convention's core elements.
The absence of big-name celebrities allowed attendees to appreciate the broader fandom beyond celebrity panels. Tony Kim, founder of Hero Within, observed that people attend Comic-Con to unite as a community of enthusiasts, embracing the shared experience over star power.
This year's event saw a remarkable commitment from fans, with tickets selling out well in advance, even reaching high prices on resale markets. Despite the lack of Hollywood presence, attendees remained devoted, embracing the convention for its intrinsic value.
For veteran artists like Brianna Garcia and James Pascoe, Comic-Con 2023 evoked nostalgic feelings of the convention's earlier years when it was primarily focused on comics and creative talents. The spirit of meeting artists, writers, and creators thrived, fostering positive vibes throughout the event.
Even newcomers, like Blackstone Publishing, sensed the difference in the convention's atmosphere, with attendees expressing enthusiasm and engaging deeply with the exhibitors.
The studios' absence allowed people to explore the exhibit floor more freely, giving them the chance to discover new artists and embrace the diverse world of comics. Pamela Jackson, co-director of San Diego State University's Center for Comics Studies, appreciated the opportunity to focus on the convention's rich offerings beyond the Hollywood-driven aspects.
As Comic-Con showcased the power of comics in addressing various social issues, the event reiterated its role in providing a sense of belonging to outsiders who find their community within its vibrant spaces.
While Hollywood's presence has its allure, this year's convention reminded attendees of the convention's roots, with a multitude of people reconnecting with the heart of Comic-Con: celebrating comics and the creative spirit.

Comic-Con 2023 in San Diego's Gaslamp District has been an electrifying event, drawing in massive crowds that make it seem like the venue is bursting at the seams. The convention boasts a vast exhibit hall, an extensive roster of panels, and a vibrant cityscape adorned to represent beloved TV shows and movies, making it feel like any other successful year.
However, a closer inspection of the panel lineup reveals a disappointing truth: more than two dozen major panels have been canceled. While cancellations are not uncommon, this time they hit the heart of the event, particularly the renowned "Hall H," where blockbuster names like Marvel, DC, Sony and others typically draw thousands of passionate attendees who are willing to camp out overnight or endure long queues.
The reason for this absence lies in the ongoing strikes led by the Writers Guild, SAG-AFTRA, and other supporting unions, such as IATSE. Proud union members have taken a stand, leaving their jobs to advocate for fair treatment, just compensation, and protection from potential job loss due to technological advancements like ChatGPT, which could replace some positions.
Hollywood's refusal to negotiate fairly has brought the industry to a standstill, with Comic-Con serving as a mere glimpse of the larger impact. TV series, movies, and various projects are experiencing production setbacks and delays in release schedules.
As a result of the strikes, actors and writers couldn't attend the convention this year, leading many companies behind TV shows and movies to withdraw entirely, unable to showcase their projects without the key talent. Alternatively, some panels had to be scaled down to include production figures, corporate representatives, or unrelated guests discussing future plans.
Out of solidarity with the unions and their efforts, any actors or writers who violated the rules and attended the convention were not covered by media outlets, including our own. Some of us here are union members ourselves (union strong!).
Nevertheless, Comic-Con has transformed into a more intimate and reminiscent experience, reminiscent of its old-fashioned roots. Smaller panels now feature engaging discussions with comic book artists, publishers, and fascinating individuals from NASA/JPL. Despite the disruptions in the TV and movie industry, attendees remain dedicated, supporting the comic book and related industries showcased at the event.
The absence of major Hollywood companies has, in some ways, brought a sense of tranquility, allowing the convention to focus on its original purpose. However, this absence has also become somewhat expected by many, urging Hollywood to recognize the value of its workers and treat them with the respect they deserve. If the industry heeds this call, there's hope that next year will see the return of these grand panels, much to the delight of fans and participants alike.
